Absences, Illnesses, Injuries
When to Keep Your Child Home
Keeping a sick child home helps them recover faster and protects our school community. Please use the following guidelines:
Monitor at Home
Consider an extra day of rest if your child has:
-
A very stuffy or runny nose or a persistent cough.
-
A mild sore throat (without fever).
-
A headache or stomach ache.
Must Stay Home
Your child must stay home for treatment and observation if they experience:
-
Fever: 100°F or higher. (Students may return only after being fever-free for 24 hours without the use of medication).
-
Vomiting or Diarrhea: Even a single episode requires staying home.
-
Respiratory Issues: A frequent, wet, or "croupy" cough.
-
General Illness: Chills, fatigue, or significant muscle aches.
Illness at School & Pickup Policy
If a student becomes unwell during the day, the school nurse will contact a parent or guardian.
-
1-Hour Pickup: We ask that you pick up your child within one hour of being notified to limit exposure to others.
-
Back-up Plan: Please have a designated emergency contact or back-up plan if you are unable to leave work or home immediately.
-
Safety First: Students are never permitted to leave school or walk home alone when ill.
Injuries and Medical Clearances
For the safety of your child, specific documentation is required following injuries or medical procedures.
| Situation | Documentation Required |
| Contagious Illness (Strep, Pink Eye, etc.) | A doctor's note clearing the return to school. |
| Injuries (Casts, Slings, Crutches, etc.) | A physician's note stating return date and physical activity restrictions. A follow-up note is required once cleared for full activity. |
| Surgery, Stitches, or Staples | A physician's note regarding return date and any activity limitations. |
| Head Injuries / Concussions | A physician's note including a "Return to Play" and "Return to Learn" plan. |
| P.E. Excusal | A parent note is fine for one day. For more than one day, a doctor's note is required. |
Important: Before heading to class, students returning from an injury or surgery must report to the Health Office first to drop off their medical notes.
Healthy Habits at School
We encourage you to remind your child of these simple ways to stay healthy:
-
Wash hands thoroughly and often.
-
Avoid touching the "T-zone" (eyes, nose, and mouth).
-
Cough or sneeze into a tissue or your elbow, then wash your hands immediately.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our school a healthy place to learn!
